Every battle is won before it is fought
Everyone takes up ‘Sun Tzu – The Art of War’ and looks for the answers for winning in the battles of life and business, but every battle is won before it is fought.
“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”
However the book as a whole is about avoiding struggle where possible, only entering conflict when you know you will win and being always prepared, knowing your enemy, knowing yourself and knowing the situation. This idea of preparation is one that involves much hard work but is always true. The meeting, the interview, the contract, the project, all these battles are won by preparation BEFORE hand. Knowing and understanding as much as possible gives you an advantage. Nothing but nothing beats good preparation, except better preparation.
Proper planning, strategy, and execution of your negotiation process is essential to preventing a painful loss. If you don’t have a winning plan, then if all possible, you should avoid fighting the battle because every battle is won before it is fought .
